    Why this worksheet matters

Anger is rarely the whole story. Beneath every angry outburst lies a deeper feeling. Hurt, fear, exhaustion, shame, or feeling unappreciated. When you learn to excavate what's underneath, you can address the real problem instead of reacting to the surface trigger.

This worksheet guides you through an "archaeological dig" into your anger to uncover the hidden emotions and unmet needs that fuel your reactions.

    Example
    Sarah's Anger Archaeology

    The situation:

"My partner forgot to pick up groceries after I reminded them twice."

    Surface anger:

"They never listen! I have to do everything myself!"

    Underneath the anger:

"I feel invisible. I'm exhausted from carrying the mental load alone."

Sarah realised: "It was never about the groceries. It was about feeling unseen."

    Understanding the Layers

    • Surface layer (anger): The visible reaction, yelling, slamming, snapping, withdrawing
    • Middle layer (thoughts): The stories we tell ourselves; "They always…", "Nobody cares…"
    • Deep layer (core feeling): The vulnerable emotion underneath, hurt, fear, shame, exhaustion
    • Foundation (unmet need): What you actually need. Rest, respect, safety, connection
    Common feelings beneath anger:
    Exhaustion
    Overwhelm
    Hurt
    Fear
    Shame
    Helplessness
    Loneliness
    Grief
    Feeling unappreciated
    Feeling unsafe

    Your Key Insight

    Remember

    • Once you know the real feeling, you can address the actual problem.
    • The anger is just the messenger, don't shoot the messenger.
    • Naming the deeper emotion often reduces its intensity by itself.
    • This isn't about suppressing anger; it's about understanding it.
