The 4 Types of Anger: Which One Is Yours? (Free Quiz)

The 4 Types of Anger: Which One Is Yours? (Free Quiz)

Most people think anger is just anger. But ask any clinical psychologist and they'll tell you: anger has a style. The way you express it (or don't) was shaped years ago — usually in childhood — and it quietly runs the show in your relationships, your work, and your own body.

The good news? Once you can name your style, you can change it. Here are the 4 types, what they look like in real life, and a free 3-minute quiz at the end so you can see which one is yours.

    1. Passive Anger 🌊 — "I'll just keep quiet."

Passive anger turns inward. You feel the heat — but you swallow it. You tell yourself it's "not worth the fight," you minimise your needs, and you keep the peace at the cost of your own.

What it sounds like: "It's fine." "I don't mind." "Whatever you want."

What it actually costs: Resentment that builds quietly for months, anxiety, low mood, and sometimes a sudden out-of-nowhere outburst when the dam finally breaks. Passive anger doesn't disappear — it just goes underground.

    2. Aggressive Anger 🔥 — "I let it rip."

This is the style most people picture when they hear "anger problem." Loud, fast, direct. You speak up — but the volume and force often leave damage behind. Doors slam. Voices rise. Words are said that can't be unsaid.

What it sounds like: "Why is that so hard to understand?!" Yelling. Slamming. Sarcasm with teeth.

What it actually costs: People closest to you start walking on eggshells. You feel guilt and shame after every outburst. Underneath it all is usually a nervous system stuck in fight mode — and a fear of not being heard.

    3. Passive-Aggressive Anger 🎭 — "I'll show you sideways."

This is the trickiest one, because it doesn't look like anger. You don't go silent or explode — you go cold. You use sarcasm, "forgetting" to do something, the silent treatment, or pointed comments dressed up as jokes.

What it sounds like: "No, no, do whatever you want." (slammed cupboard) "Oh I didn't realise that was important to you."

What it actually costs: Loved ones feel confused, hurt and shut out. Issues never get fully resolved — they just sit there, building chronic relational tension. This style usually develops when expressing anger directly felt unsafe earlier in life.

    4. Assertive Anger 🛡️ — "I use it as information."

This is the goal. Assertive anger treats the feeling as a signal, not a weapon. You name what you feel, you ask for what you need, and you can hold a boundary without attacking the other person.

What it sounds like: "When that happened, I felt dismissed. I need us to handle it differently next time."

The honest truth: Even people who score highest here usually slip into one of the other three styles under chronic stress, with specific people (hello, family), or when they're exhausted. Assertive anger is a skill, not a personality trait.

    So which one is yours?

Most people are a mix — with one dominant style and a backup that comes out under pressure. The 12-question quiz below scores you across all four so you can see your full profile, not just a label.

What to do once you know your style

Whatever your style — none of them make you a bad person. They're patterns. Patterns can be changed. That's the whole point of this work.
